X2's iTablet runs Windows 7

Following the frenzy of interest over Apple's launch of the iPad, a UK firm has unveiled its own slate-format device called iTablet, one of the rumoured names for the Apple device and seemingly aimed at a similar market.

Expected to be available in April from X2 Computing, the iTablet is based on Intel's Atom processor and runs Windows 7, but includes a user interface that will be familiar to mobile phone owners and will revolutionise the way Windows users can access and use data on the move, according to the firm.

X2 said that it will ship a range of iTablet devices, with 10.2in or 12.1in screens optionally supporting multi-touch capability, hard drives up to 250GB, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and optional 3G mobile broadband.

The range will include versions with a built-in 1.3-megapixel camera and optional HDMI video output. All models feature standard USB ports.

In what seems to be a dig at Apple's iPad, X2 said that its iTablet can run multiple applications simultaneously, "something that cannot be achieved with some other operating systems", and supports Adobe's Flash for web-based content, which the iPad does not.

X2 already ships a range of ruggedised tablet PCs and laptops for industrial applications, but the iTablet seems to be aimed at a broader market.

"ITablets can be used in a wider range of business and home environments and will deliver a lower cost of ownership over the operational life of the equipment," said X2 technical director Robin Daunter.

Pricing for the iTablet has yet to be announced.
