Google has said that its Nexus One is proving a hit with developers.
In a company blog post, Google Android developer advocate Tim Bray said that the company had completely sold out of the unlocked Android handsets it is offering to members of its developer network.
The company has been offering developers the unlocked handsets bundled with the latest version of Android OS as a tool to help craft and test Android applications.
"We think it’s a good development platform and a nice phone. Apparently, you agree," Bray wrote.
"Somewhat too many of you, in fact; we blew through the (substantial) initial inventory in almost no time, and they are back-ordered from HTC."
The shortage of developer models sits in contrast to a lack of success for the Nexus One in the consumer space. Google first launched the handset in January and within a week reports began to surface that the Nexus One was falling short of sales expectations.
With Android handsets from other developers performing well in the market, Google announced in July that it would be shutting down its online store. A few days later the last handset was sold.
Bray said that the company would work to get new shipments of the handset for developers, but noted a market shortage of the AMOLED display screen used in the device.
