Apple is reportedly mulling a new round of price cuts for two of its flagship Macintosh computer models.
Reports on Mac news site Apple Insider claim that the company is looking to cut prices for both notebooks and desktops.
The site credits unnamed but "extremely reliable" sources in reporting that Apple will drop the price of the 13in MacBook consumer notebook along with certain iMac desktop models.
The rumours come in the midst of what has been a tough economic stretch for Apple. After seeing Mac sales begin to slow the last quarter, the company was said to be laying off as many as 1,600 employees in its retail operations.
Pricing has also become a marketing issue for Apple. Competitors such as Microsoft have used the economic crisis to take aim at the Macintosh's higher price tag with a recent series of commercials and whitepapers.
Those who do pay for Apple hardware, however, seem largely happy with their decision. The company came out on top in a pair of recent customer satisfaction surveys for the PC market with the Macintosh, and the smartphone handset market with the iPhone.

"a tough economic stretch for Apple"? You don't say? While a drop in sales for ANYBODY would be reasonable to expect in these tough economic times -- and there was (but) a 3% drop in Mac sales last quarter with no new offerings since the fall -- Apple recently reported their best non-holiday quarter ever ( http://www.betanews.com/article/Apple-reports-the-best-nonholiday-quarter-in-its-history/1240433273 ). Also, while their stock went from $192 to a low of $78, this occurred during the insanity last fall, just like everyone else. Since then, however, their stock has rebounded back up to $127, a price SIX TIMES Microsoft's and almost TWELVE TIMES Dell's. Their market cap is almost FIVE TIMES Dell's (and closer to Microsoft's cap than Dell is to Apple's). And then, you have iPhone 3.0 coming, probably new iPhones and rumours of computer price cuts. All this will add up to incredible volume when totalling all their platforms for this year. What? Me worry?
