Sony has been forced to backtrack just days after stating that PlayStation 3 devices sold in Europe and Australia would lack a hardware component making them fully compatible with PS2 games.
The electronics giant said last week that it had removed the Emotion Engine from the European and Australasian machines in a move to cut costs.
Sony now plans to provide emulation software for limited backwards compatibility with PS2 games.
It was Sony's use of the word "limited" that caused a furore in the market but, in a bid to calm the critics, Sony has now said that over 1,000 PS2 games will be compatible with the PS3 when it launches.
However, now that some users are satisfied that they will still be able to play their existing games on the new machine, a new concern has emerged.
Consumers are questioning why the European model, which has now lost the Emotion Engine to cut costs, can still be more expensive than those already sold in Japan and North America.

Petition against sony to change their minds!
Sign the Petiton to get Sony to recgnise what their customers want!! www.bokz.com I will briefly explain my position so the rich idiots with no kids dont just flame me without reading my page. I have a 4 and 6yr old. I have over 200 ps2 games which they love to play. I cannot easily have two consoles cabled up and my kids cannot swap cables on their own! Very good games are still being released for the ps2 and they are cheaper than the PS3 Ps3 games are extremely limited in number I would buy a 60gig ps3 if the BC worked properly, but unfortunately the morons at sony couldnt even get that right and it wont support half our games and many that it does support lose a lot of functionality. yes I want to play ps3 games but not at the sacrifice of PS2, and many are in a similar position. If Sony dont make a BC compatible console, there are thousands of us that will just buy something different, and cheaper with more games. If you are one of these please sign my petition!!! www.bokz.com

X-Box 360 for me
I had decided to pre-order a PS3 for the Australian launch, even though us aussies we were being extorted to the tune of well over $100 even when you take currency conversions and GST into account, but when they decided to drop/downgrade the PS/2 support I decided that I'd put my $999 towards an X-Box 360 and HD-DVD Add-on and pocket the change.

Australian Rip Off
Australians have long been ripped off by their own importers. We normally pay 2 to 3 times what the Americans do for their products. Economies of scale we hear but don't believe in a global market place. Sony is just doing to us what we've been doing to ourselves for years, we are so used to being told what to do by a higher authority. Time to stand up and demand better prices.

Sony screws Europe again :(
Why are we getting screwed by Sony...if they are deleting a main component then they should lower the price. I will now stick with Xbox. Screw Sony.

Well, that's us not ever buying a PS3 !
My children share a birthday this month, co-inciding with the UK release of the Playstation 3... and, that's right off their present list now. I'm used to the arrogance of Sony etc. making Europe a 'last thought' for releases, but to remove backwards compatibilty (on the grounds of costs) and then put the price up compared to the rest of the world (yet again - same old story)... Well, Sony can get stuffed! I for one cannot be doing with the kids tantrums when all their PS1/PS2 games no longer work - because Sony want to save a few dollars on a unit. (Expletives). If they can't bite the bullet and show us the same respect they offer us the US and Japanese markets then I've had it with Sony. Fed up with all the (greed) of the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD debacle too. (Several more expletives.)

Tired of the "more expensive outside USA" story
I don't want s/w emulation... true compatibility with the emotion engine - this will stop me upgrading to PS3.. I might as well look at alterntives now compatability is broken. What can we do to stop this "price" issue ?

Last Straw - I've had enough
Oh come one. First we are now a year behind initial forecasted release; 5 mts now behind the US & Japan. & now to cap it all off Sony are removing the Emotion Chip but keeping the cost as high as before. I had bought Resistance Fall of Man in the US in prep for this release - but now - forget it. Maybe I need to give 360 another look. Taken for a ride? Time for this dumb smuck to get off the bus.
