Chip maker Via has launched the latest range of processors based on its Isaiah architecture.
The Via Nano range promises up to four times the performance of the existing Via C7 processor family while remaining within the same power range.
Via Nano is also pin compatible with C7 processors allowing them to be used in existing motherboards and integrated systems.
The new range of 64-bit processors are built using Fujitsu's 65nm process technology and have an idle power draw of just 100mW, making them well suited to miniature notebooks.
The Nano range has been optimised for media processing to cater for the increased demand in video and other multimedia applications.
"Via Nano processors represent the next generation of x86 technology, providing the fundamental building blocks for a new genre of optimised computing solutions," said Wenchi Chen, president and chief executive at Via.
"'Small is beautiful' is more than a design strategy; it's our vision of where the PC market is heading and our new processors will help the market realise that dream."
The family will range from the Via Nano U2300 1.0GHz CPU which has a maximum power draw of 5W up to the L2100 1.8GHz processor at 25W.
Via's Nano processors are available now for OEMs and motherboard vendors. Systems featuring Via Nano processors are expected to reach the market in the third quarter of 2008.
