An overweight 26 year-old man from north-eastern China has died after a ceaseless gaming session over the Lunar New Year holiday.
Chinese state media reported that Xu Yan, a local teacher from Jinzhou, in Liaoning province, collapsed on Saturday after spending almost 15 days playing online games.
According to his parents, Xu found the holiday boring as all the markets and other businesses were closed, leaving only the TV and computer as entertainment.
As vnunet.com reported last week, the Chinese government is very worried about the apparent problems with internet addiction among teenagers and young adults in the country.
Surveys released by state media suggest that 2.6 million, almost 14 per cent, of teenage internet users are classed as addicts.
The authorities have been introducing sweeping measures to help combat the problem.
These include banning teenagers from cyber-cafés, limiting online gaming sessions, and even boot camp-style military training, psychological counselling and electrocution.

I am not a doctor or an expert on the subject but I think that electrocution is going to make more harm to the individual's healt that being adicted to games.

actually.
actually, it was from sitting for 15 days. not a weekend. sitting for a prolonged period of time will cause clotting in the legs and other arteries. the blood will start to congeal. any suddden movement after that will cause a heart attack. it wasnt directly from the gaming. it was from being lazy, and being ADDICTED to the games. so yes and no. it was his fault, but the game is not to blame.

Scared parent
My son was addicted to World of Warcraft. These articles about dying during gaming make sense. Young people need to get out more, enjoy nature and meet people in Person! We care about you!

@Jessdecosta: He played for 15 days, not 15 hours.

Stop blaming the Games!
This article doesn't make complete sense. Firstly he wasn't a student he was a teacher, so it doesn't reflect on young people. Secondly 15 hours sitting is not that much 'over a weekend' - most students doing their degrees would call that an average weekend studying around exam time. Thirdly - there was nothing else to do 'seriously" - what about a bike ride, a game of tennis etc. This guy has serious lethagy problems. I don't think gaming had much to do with it - it was health problems due to a sedate lifestyle and maybe that weekend was the camel's straw.
