QAZ.com has launched a UK directory of independently reviewed websites that can be searched by topic.

The unique addressing system enables consumers to find a list of websites simply by typing in the topic they are interested in. Anyone looking to buy CDs for example, can type cds.qaz.com into their browser to call up a list of CD-related sites.

"We think people should be able to use the search engine they've always used - the one in their heads," said Steve Homer, QAZ.com's founder. "We've created an online service that has all the rigour of a human-constructed directory but offers the flexibility and ease of use of a computer-driven search engine."

"Linking the topic to the web address in this way takes the uncertainty out of using a directory service, and speeds access considerably. It becomes a sort of command line search engine," he added.

The site also uses around 600 aliases to direct users to relevant sections. For example dogs, dog and cat all lead to pet.qaz.com. All the websites featured have been independently reviewed and given a star rating.

QAZ.com currently offers reviews of 1500 sites in more than 100 categories. This will rapidly be expanded to 200 categories, Homer said, although the number of sites reviewed will stabilise at around 2500. Consumers will also be encouraged to recommend sites for reviewing.

A Wap version of the directory is currently being developed for internet mobile phones and will be launched later this year.
