IBM has agreed to acquire Isogen Corporation, a provider of software asset management tools for mainframes.
The tools track inventory and measure the use of software running on mainframe computers. IBM plans to add the technology to its Tivoli License Manager product.
Big Blue will use the acquisition to build an asset management tool that provides a single view of a company's software licences, usage and inventory, the company said.
"For businesses today, having information about software assets is crucial to making the right decisions," said Al Zollar, general manager for IBM Tivoli software.
Asset management tools are used to track and manage software use within organisations, helping managers to identify underused applications and adjust licences accordingly.
The software also tracks duplicate copies of applications between divisions or as a result of mergers.
IBM has been a reseller of several Isogen products since 1997. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Isogen has 90 employees and 200 customers for its products.
