Intel has begun implementing a major reorganisation of its business, including the creation of five new commercial units.
The newly formed groups will emerge from the firm's old chip architecture and communications divisions.
Intel said it will create a Mobility Group to handle laptops and PDA devices, while chief technologist Pat Gelsinger will head up a Digital Enterprise Group looking at business systems.
A Digital Healthcare Group under Louis Burns will look at integrating Intel technology with the healthcare market, and the Digital Home Group will look at consumer electronic devices, signalling Intel's increasing commitment to this sector.
Finally a Channel Products Group will be formed by amalgamating Intel's existing channel businesses into one body.
"Intel is putting the people and resources in place to sharpen its focus on the development of platforms that meet the demands of our customers and provide innovative and exciting new technologies for the marketplace," said Intel president Paul Otellini.
The restructuring has not been accompanied by any staff redundancy announcements, and Intel said that its other divisions will remain unchanged.
