Microsoft chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates has lifted the lid on his company's forthcoming Windows Home Concept (WHC) PC developed in collaboration with Hewlett Packard.
The device, designed to be a simple-to-use system that is quiet, always available and energy-efficient, integrates wireless technologies, a broadband connection and multiple high-definition television tuners.
It also ships with entertainment and media management capabilities that allow it to control interoperable devices on the wireless home network, and integrates telephony, email and messaging.
The WHC, which Gates will showcase at the 13th annual Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) to be held from 4 to 7 May in Seattle, is an example of what Microsoft describes as "seamless computing".
"Microsoft continues to work with partners and customers to lead industry innovation, and the Windows platform continues to be the development platform of choice for the hardware community," said Gates in a statement.
"The synergy between hardware and software is what provides customers with a seamless computing experience, making the technology in their lives work as a connected whole."
Other technologies due to be displayed at WinHEC include:
