By the second half of next year, users will be able to wirelessly synchronise their diary entries between their handheld devices and PCs thanks to a new alliance between Microsoft and Intel.

The two companies have developed a way of incorporating Bluetooth technology into Microsoft's Windows operating system to enable users to transfer files between Bluetooth-supported hardware, as well as access the internet, without the use of cables or infrared technology.

Bluetooth is a short-distance radio standard that enables devices such as PCs, laptops and mobile phones to communicate at distances of up to 10 metres. Microsoft and Intel are calling for independent software vendors to write software that supports interfaces to Bluetooth-supported Windows applications.

Simon Ellis, manager of Intel's communications marketing group, said: "We will begin developing and testing these interfaces and work with software developers to define how this architecture will work."

As well as enabling users to swap files and synchronise information between Bluetooth and Microsoft Windows-supported devices, Microsoft has also developed a way to enable the operating system to automatically access the internet without the use of cables or infrared technologies, such as those currently found in mobile phones.

Field workers, for example, could wirelessly log onto the internet if their Windows laptops are within range of Bluetooth access point devices that are expected to be installed at airports and other public places.
