Satnav device maker TomTom is to offer a free online route planner accessed via a web browser.
Currently available as a closed beta preview, the TomTom online Route Planner will be unique in offering door-to-door route planning options based on real-time and historic traffic flow information during the day, according to the firm.
Other online route planners typically do not have access to live traffic information.
TomTom offered no indication of when it expects the service to be available, but said in a statement that it will be gradually rolled out based on the success and feedback from the beta programme.
The company is expecting heavy demand for the service when it is available, and wanted to be sure it could meet demand.
"The introduction of the online Route Planner marks an important step in our strategy to make our award-winning navigation available for all users, regardless of the platform that is used," said TomTom chief executive Harold Goddijn.
The Route Planner is currently available in English, French, German, Dutch, Italian and Spanish.
