The first phones running Windows Mobile 6.5 go on sale today, with Microsoft extolling the virtues of the new operating system.
The company has promised a number of improvements, as well as access to a range of online services including Windows Marketplace for Mobile and My Phone.
My Phone is a backup system that can synchronise directly with the user's PC to restore lost information should the phone go missing. A premium version, which will launch initially in the US, will let users locate their lost phone using GPS.
The owner can then remotely lock the handset, and add a 'please return to' message on its home screen. If these measures fail to work, the phone will vibrate annoyingly before deleting all of its contents.
Windows Marketplace for Mobile is expected to have some 200 applications ready on launch day. Microsoft said that these would range from business and leisure mobile apps to games.
Typical online features associated with Windows Mobile 6.5 include quick access to Windows Live, Bing, Mobile Office Communicator and Microsoft Online Services (Exchange and SharePoint).
