While much of the mobile phone industry has suffered a downturn, in Russia it is experiencing a boom.
According to the Moscow Times, more than 220,000 mobile contracts were signed in the Russian capital last year, with the figure now closer to 350,000. And dealers report that handset sales have doubled over the last year.

One analyst estimated that more than half a million mobile phones are sold in Moscow each month and the figures are climbing. One dealer reported selling as many handsets in the first half of 2002 as over the whole of 2001.
And fashion-conscious Muscovites are upgrading their handsets more than anyone in Europe, according to the newspaper.
While Europeans change their mobile phones on average once every 18 months, Russians are buying new or extra phones at least once a year.
