EMusic has launched a music download service in 25 EU member states in a direct assualt on Apple's iTunes.
The download service offers a catalogue of 1.7 million MP3 files that do not have the same digital rights management (DRM) issues as tracks from iTunes.
"EMusic is the only major digital music service that allows you to burn as many CDs as you like and copy downloads to an unlimited number of computers and portable MP3 players, including the iPod," said the company in a statement.
However, DRM technology provider SDC believes that, while selling independent music without DRM is a good way for unsigned and niche interest bands to generate some revenue, it is not good for them in the long term.
"As soon as they become successful they will sign with a major label to ensure global distribution and marketing support and this will take them into the DRM space in their own interest," said Michael Bornhaeusser, chief executive at SDC.
"High quality music will remain protected by DRM to secure its value and grant the return on investment for artists, labels and publishers."
EMusic's strong focus on independent labels also puts it into competition with the MySpace social networking site, which recently announced that it will sell independent music from its site.
EMusic has signed deals with 8,500 independent labels to provide material outside the commercial mainstream.
"Independent music is thriving, and the online opportunity for independent labels is even greater," said Alison Wenham, chairman of The Association of Independent Music.
