Microsoft broke into data warehousing last week with a number of strategic alliances and a new architecture designed to move SQL Server further up the enterprise ladder.

Specifically, Microsoft has formed an alliance with Business Objects, ExecuSoft Systems, Informatica, NCR, Pilot Software, Platinum Technology, Praxis and SAP. Entitled Microsoft Alliance for Data Warehousing, the initiative is aimed at establishing a position for SQL Server as a database for data warehousing.

Members of the coalition will work with Microsoft to create the Active Data Warehousing Framework, which is being designed to simplify the integration and management of data warehouses. This Framework will include an extensible set of COM-based interfaces. It is expected to be available later this year.

In conjunction with the alliance, Microsoft said it will enhance SQL server to include new features for enhanced query processing, information delivery, data management and integration with the Internet.

Microsoft?s Consulting Services has also been included in the picture and plans to introduce a service aimed at helping customers plan, design and implement data warehousing solutions based on SQL Server.

Jim Allchin, senior vice president of Microsoft?s desktop and business division, said: The Microsoft Alliance for Data Ware housing will make it easier and more cost effective for customers to implement solutions based on the combined technologies.
