Handset maker HTC has started to roll out the Android 2.1 Éclair upgrade in the UK for the HTC Hero.
In a statement on its web site, HTC said that it is committed to providing the best user experience, so it is pushing out a firmware update for the Hero.
“Your phone will receive a notification of this update when it is made available. Simply press OK to accept the update via a data connection such as Wi-Fi or GPRS/3G,” it read.
“Please back up your data first, and you have to upgrade your phone with the first FOTA package to be able to get the Android 2.1 FOTA upgrade.”
HTC recommends using a free Wi-Fi hotspot or an unlimited data plan to apply this update, with standard data connection charges applying otherwise.
The Taiwanese manufacturer’s latest devices, the Desire and Wildfire, already ship with the latest version of Google’s 2.1 Android OS and Hero users will now be able to use the interface.
Android 2.1 comes with a range of added benefits, including a revamped UI, Microsoft Exchange, built-in Flash and HTML 5 support and improved Google Maps, and helps to optimise hardware speed, according to Google.

Delays
This is long long long overdue. HTC seem to focus very much on new handset development rather than supporting the handsets they have already produced. I for one would love to see the time between Android release and HTC release compress greatly, so that people do not have to root their handsets in order to enjoy the great new features. After all, Google do know what they are doing and having faith in them to not strip out specific features would be amazing. The fact that 2.1 ships with Voice to Text functionality, which HTC drops is just appalling. I've had to hack this core functionality back into my HTC Desire. Couple this with the amount of fiddling and faffing that network providers do in the firmware also, it does feel that rooting the device and using core Froyo is the only real way to go in order to bypass all the decisions these companies make on my behalf based on how they think I should use my phone. I might not use it, but I damned well want the choice. Addition is better than subtraction.

I'm eagerly awaiting the update notification, I simply cannot wait to have my Hero running smoothly and with the additional features added, it should be a great welcome.
