Apple has begun shipping the single processor models of its Power Mac G5, claiming that they represent the first 64-bit desktop processor with the first commercially available 1GHz front-side bus.

The company claimed that it had received orders for over 100,000 Power Mac G5s since its introduction on 23 June. It plans to ship its dual 2GHz Power Mac G5 later this month.

Powered by the PowerPC G5 processor designed by IBM and Apple, the 64-bit processing technology is designed to be compatible with existing 32-bit applications.

The processor architecture, which supports dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 configurations each with an independent 1GHz front-side bus, provides up to 16Gbps of bandwidth, the company said.
