SMC Networks has launched what it claims is the first 28-port Gigabit Ethernet Layer 2 switch to combine IPv6 capabilities with green Ethernet compatibility.
The TigerSwitch 10/100/1000 SMC8028L2 has a fanless design that will reduce energy costs and offer aggregated bandwidth of 56Gbit/s, the firm said.
Frank Emmerlich, product marketing manager at SMC, explained that the product had been introduced to help enterprises meet "evolving network demands".
"By combining quality of service, virtual LAN and IPv6 management we can provide a high degree of scalability for mission-critical applications," he said.
"Our eco-friendly design supports a power saving of up to 50 per cent, so that small and medium enterprises can reduce energy costs without compromising on network performance or reliability."
The TigerSwitch has a range of management and security features including IEEE 802.1x, user authentication based on port numbers, and the ability to separate visitors or customers with different virtual LAN identities.
The product is available now for £445.
