Nominet expected to approve .me.uk

Second level domain (SLD) names could be available on Monday if Nominet members give it the go ahead at a vote to be held this Friday.

Members of the national register for domain names that end .uk are being asked to approve the .me.uk domain name that has been designed for personal use. Nominet is expecting members to vote in favour of the new names.

"We know there is considerable interest in an SLD for personal users and we expect that our members will vote enthusiastically in favour of .me.uk," said Lesley Cowley, operations director at Nominet UK.

The rules stipulate that you have to be the person named or need a legitimate claim to the name applied for.

To discourage people from speculative registrations, names registered through Nominet members will start at £50 + VAT, which will be gradually reduced to £5 after six months. Direct registrations will be set at £80 + VAT.
