Networking hardware vendor D-Link has shipped a new line of combined router and storage systems for home office and small business users.
The company said that the new DIR 685 Xtreme N line of routers combine Ethernet and Wi-Fi router technologies with network-attached storage (NAS) hardware. Additional features include USB device sharing, and a built-in LCD photo display screen.
Storage comes in the form of a single Sata drive bay which will accommodate drives of up to 1TB in size. The router will also sport a tool which can allow FTP access to the drive both locally and online.
NAS systems have been in use by medium and large enterprises for decades, but the systems have yet to gain significant traction in the consumer and home office markets. Microsoft has recently sought to move into a similar niche with its Windows Home Server platform.
D-Link hopes that the new line of routers will appeal to people who make heavy use of file-transfer and peer-to-peer services, rather than solely to archive media libraries.
The company highlighted the built-in FTP and streaming software tools as key selling points to users that regularly download and share files.

I'm a Netgear gal!
I haven't used the D-Link routers, however, I've been using the Netgear Rangemax WNDR3700 and have been very happy with it. It has worked very well for both my business needs and my personal gaming habit!! The routers have some similar features and functions.
