BlockMaster has announced an update to its SafeStick secure USB drives, adding new features to its management console that enable business users to deploy applications to the storage devices that employees can run from the stick itself.
SafeStick devices are available in capacities from 1GB up to 64GB, and are protected by built-in 256-bit AES hardware encryption.
The company already offers a web-based management tool, SafeConsole, that lets organisations enforce password, usage and storage policies. Each SafeStick checks in with the SafeConsole server over the web every time it is used.
SafeConsole version 4.0 adds additional capabilities, including the ability to publish applications and files to SafeStick users remotely, anti-malware features, and Lockout, which blocks the use of unauthorised USB devices.
Anti-malware support includes measures to block threats that use the Autorun facility, and FileBlocker, which only allows file types on a central whitelist to be copied onto a SafeStick.
The Publisher feature can even be used to deploy a virtual machine onto a 4GB or larger memory stick, enabling users to carry a "virtual laptop" around, according to BlockMaster.
"We are constantly evolving our product to provide a simple solution to the complex issue of security and usability. These new features will not only give administrators complete control over portable software, but peace of mind that company information is always protected," said BlockMaster chief security officer Anders Pettersson.
SafeConsole 4.0 is available in three editions. Intro comes free with every SafeStick and enforces password policy only. SafeConsole Enforce is licensed from £300 and includes the full range of policy enforcing features, while SafeConsole Enforce & Enable includes Publisher and all other features.
