Sony is set to release its first seven titles in the high-definition Blu-ray format and has earmarked 20 June for the films to hit the stores.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment said that the rollout will coincide with the delivery of the first commercially available Blu-ray player from Samsung.

The move is important for Sony as the company is responsible for the Blu-ray standard that competes with Toshiba's HD-DVD.

Many industry observers have likened the rivalry to the situation in the 1980s when the VHS standard battled with Betamax.

The titles that Sony will offer on 20 June include House of Flying Daggers, Hitch, The Fifth Element and 50 First Dates.

More announcements are expected from Sony over the next few weeks.
