Microsoft has sold its SoftImage subsidiary to Avid for $285 million (#175 million) in cash and a 9.1% stake in Avid. Avid is a leading supplier of digital tools for film, video, audio and broadcast, and the acquisition adds 3D animation, 2D cell animation and compositing software to its product line. SoftImage's product line includes SoftImage/3D, a cutting edge 3D tool that has been used on films such as Luc Besson's Fifth Element.
