IBM, which has admitted that it failed to capitalise on the internet explosion of the 1990s, now claims that it is ready to reap the benefits of the next web boom.

Chief executive Samuel Palmisano told a shareholders' meeting that a new internet era was fast approaching, and that Big Blue had the right tools for the new wave of emerging devices.

Palmisano described the company's tools as security technology, networking and its giant services arm.
