IBM has agreed to acquire Arsenal Digital Solutions for an undisclosed sum.
The privately-held US firm offers an on-demand data protection service allowing enterprises to manage security and data back-up systems remotely.
IBM said that the transaction will close in March 2008, and that Arsenal will be absorbed into its Global Technology Services branch as part of what the company now calls Business Continuity and Resiliency Services (BCRS).
Big Blue hopes that the purchase will allow it to pitch a managed service to enterprises that are increasingly worried about data protection and regulatory compliance.
"Information protection is not optional for businesses today," said Philippe Jarre, vice president of the BCRS unit.
"Continuity of data, applications and infrastructure means survival in a world that operates around the clock regardless of a company's size or industry. "
IBM said that the new data protection and back-up service will be marketed to companies of all sizes.
