Social news site Digg is to expand its coverage from Monday to cover more topic areas than just technology news.

The site, which allows users to submit stories and vote for ones that interest them, will expand to include Science, Entertainment, World & Business, Gaming and Videos.
AOL owned Netscape recently unveiled a Digg competitor with similar functionality but covering more subject areas.

The new Netscape offers 30 categories, including Art & Design, Celebrities and Shopping, and is currently in testing before a full launch later this year.

The redesigned Digg will allow further user customisation. If a reader is not interested in a particular subject area, it can be turned off so that it will not display in the future.

Building on the social nature of the site, users will also be able to easily see stories submitted or voted on by friends.

A new feature will show stories that a group of friends has agreed on, providing an additional way to filter news.

However, social news sites are not without problems. As anyone can submit and vote for articles, such sites have been criticised for providing new opportunities for spammers and scammers.
