Sony has unleashed its third-generation AIBO robot dogs, claiming that it has taught the cyber-hound new tricks such as the ability to house-sit, record videos and play back music.

The latest canine-like AIBO Entertainment Robots, dubbed ERS-7M2/W and ERS-7M2/B, feature new software applications, more personalised interaction functions and a pearl black colour to contrast with their older siblings.

"The latest AIBO Entertainment Robot is the perfect companion for design-savvy customers seeking a whimsical way to combine the convenience of advanced technology with entertainment applications," said Ken Orii, senior sales and marketing manager at Sony Electronics' e-Solutions company.

With new AIBO Entertainment Player functions, owners of the AIBO ERS-7 model can control, program and navigate the robot wirelessly from their PCs.

The latest robotic dogs also ship with improved Mind 2 software designed to improve AIBO's reaction time for better response to voice commands.

The devices also have advanced face tracking and faster, smoother movements that improve their ability to avoid obstacles at a greater distance or in a darker environment.

Digital camera functions have received a boost with the addition of video recording capabilities, which Sony claims can make AIBO an effective house-sitter, recording activities in the home while their owners are away.

AIBO robots can also play back digital music files (compatible with WAV, MP3 and WMA) or CDs from its speakers while dancing to the beat.

The new ERS-7M2/W (pearl white) and ERS-7M2/B (pearl black) models will be available in mid-November for about $1,900 (£1,000).
