Hackers are exerting pressure on internet bookies, threatening them with distributed Denial of Service attacks unless they pay protection money.
According to the Financial Times, the threats have been sent to internet bookies via email.

The culprits are believed to be gangs in eastern Europe, who threaten to disrupt companies' websites in the run-up to big sporting events such as the SuperBowl and the Grand National.
Matt Percival, European business development director for security company Top Layer, said the hackers are using a sophisticated new mode of attack to cause maximum damage.
The attack is fragmented to cause problems not just to front-end devices such as gateways and routers, but to the web and database servers at the back.
"For online gaming sites, the database is their lifeblood," he added.
