Taiwanese chipset manufacturer Via Technologies has launched a digital media chipset aimed at manufacturers of devices such as personal video recorders and set-top boxes.
Unveiled at the CeBIT trade show, the CN400 chipset will target makers of "compact, low-noise and mobile entertainment devices", which need to rapidly decode audio and video data streams.

It is designed for connection to new high-definition television systems, which are becoming popular in the US.
The CN400 includes a DVI interface to connect to high-end flatscreen monitors, and is able to deal with Mpeg-2 and Mpeg-4 video streams.
Via said it expects motherboards featuring the chipset to be available later this year.
