UK supermarket chain Asda intends to start a price war by selling Sony's PlayStation 2 console for just £49 from 22 February.
Asda will have 10,000 of the PS2 consoles on the shelves, and the unit will be on sale in every one of Asda's stores in the UK and Northern Ireland.
Currys, Argos and HMV all currently retail the PS2 at £94.99.
Asda has also cut the cost of some of the most popular PS2 games. Rayman: Raving Rabbids and Tomb Raider Legend are both available in stores for just £9, and FIFA 07 for £19.
With only 30 days to go until the UK launch of the new PlayStation 3 on March 23, Asda has also confirmed that it will have PS3 consoles in stock next month.
Asda offered 80,000 DVD players for just £9 last month, and sold out within 24 hours. The company anticipates that the cut-price Sony consoles will prove just as popular with customers.
