Auction giant eBay is preventing its sellers from using Google's rival Checkout service.
Google Checkout allows consumers to buy products online without having to reveal any sensitive financial information to sellers.
The search firm started offering the service to online shops last month. It had previously been used only to pay for Google advertisements and offerings from Google Video.
Google Checkout is seen as a competitor to eBay's PayPal service, which allows for payments between individuals, as well as between consumers and merchants.
Citing PayPal's ease of use and fraud protection features, eBay states on the Rules For Sellers section of its website that it "strongly encourages sellers to offer payments through PayPal".
Further down on the same page, eBay lists Google Checkout among a series of services that are prohibited.
Offering buyers the option of using any of the blacklisted payment services can result in a cancellation of the listing, limits on account privileges, account suspension and loss of PowerSeller status, eBay warns.
EBay spokeswoman Catherine England told vnunet.com that Google Checkout lacks a track record as a secure and reliable consumer payment service.
She acknowledged that Google is an established brand that has consumer confidence, and that Google had been using the Checkout service before launching it as a merchant offering last week.
"But making sure that each payment model offers substantial protection is important for our buyers and sellers," said England. "We are using the same criteria to evaluate all payment services."
EBay allows another 13 payment services in addition to PayPal, including Allpay.net and MyCheckFree.
Google Checkout is likely to be deemed an approved payment service once it has a proven track record, according to England.
The spokeswoman was unable to say when this would occur, but claimed that eBay will continue monitoring the service and will listen to feed back from its users.

Welcome 2 fraud @ paypal
Hatred for paypal amongst users has been known for years and it is completely understandable why. I was an eBay powerseller business user until 3 years ago selling digital consumer goods, followed all procedures to avoid chargebacks, however, as it happens a customer claimed his account was fraudulently used to make payments therefore started a dispute, i passed on all details incl recorded delivery, signatures, receipts to paypal, Paypal after 3 months temp ban on my account, refused customer and told him that his purchase was not protected, customer went to his bank for help they overturned the decision and forced paypal to pay his money back, after 8 months of the incident paypal opened the dispute aagain and blocked me from using the account, only this time crook (paypal) claimed my business was not protected (which was not true) and unless i paid them money back i would not be able to use my account on paypal/eBay. I refused to return payment. Paypal then without my consent tried to withdraw money from my bank account under the direct debit flaw ( direct debit must be signed to enable protection for buyer/seller). disgruntled i left paypal ebay for good. People avoid both of these sites as they are nothing but legal scams perpetrated on consumers and leave them exposed to face consequences and they have the audacity to say Googlecheckout is not good enough, hunh

I hate paypal
Paypal is the worst online payment service out there online. They have my account lock up because of my bank doing a charge back on a shipment that i got short change on some items in my shipment from overseas china , and the funny thing is that the close the case , and told me to seek out my visa card provider for help in getting my money back and sending the 2 items i got back to china which they refuse to give my bank the address to the wholeslaer in china . So my account has been lock up since last month for nothing i did wrong at all . Oh i forgot to mention they paid the seller from there account , and now want money from me back now but my bank is fighting paypal crooks as we called them i hate i ever found out about this site also i hate ebay also since they own paypal they work together in all they do online . So its just not the buyers getting screwed we get screwed also . I hope and pray google take all there customers down , and run them off line very soon paypal crooks !!

Paypal is open to scammers
i broght a par of designer shoes size 3 new from aseller, the seller didn;t send these so i reposrted this to paypal, then she did send these which turned out to be a huge size 8 wornout pair, after reporting this again they closed the case in the sellers favour and the reason they gave was she had priveded them with proof of posting, so anyone can put a photo with good text selling items and wait for the buyer to put in a claim with paypal then sent any rubbish and all they have to do is show they have been posted and the seller gets a way with the scam, you just can not change your claim from goods not recieved to goods not as advertised , i even sent them photos backing up my claim, i looked up to paypal and thought if anything like this did happen they they would do the right thing and make the seller refund my money, the shoes i have was only 5 sizes larger than the ones i thought i was buying and i can not even sell them on as they are worn out , i am trying to get them look again at my case now they have photos to back my claim up and if not for me then for other buyers,

PayPal running scared
paypal has realised that a competitive blow from google, another heavyweight champ, could see it suffer a real loss in terms of customers...what ebay fails to grasp, is the concept that to keep its customers..it should resort to providing great customer service with competitive cost rates...rather than scrapping over its customers like a jealous wifebeating drunk in a back alley.

A loser every time
They charge sellers extortianate fees but treat buyers who lose out very badly. I recently bought a ?new? item on eBay at a total cost of £220.85 that turned out to be wrecked on arrival and obtained originally on a fraudulent credit card. PayPal would only refund £105. So much for the so-called protection.

Paypal is total rubbish
I have been on the end of a number of scams by ebay members and when reported to Paypal with a claim they only recovered pennies and still allowed thre scammer to trade on Ebay. I find it very unhealthy for the Ebay to own the payment company also. When they were separate companies the service was better and they kept each other in check. Once joined the service went down hill and prices rocketed. Greed never wins except in this case.

It's our right to chose
eBay wants the monopoly with the payment option for buyer's/sellers.The other "13" sources allowed for payment use are virtually unknown or rarely used payment methods. It is the competition issue with eBay because Google is so well known. I'll bet their fee's aren't as high as Paypal's and Google's customer care probably wouldn't be as evasive as paypal.Trust ans safety? That's another issue.

Down with Paypal
Paypal has screwed me out of my money more than once. As a buyer, AND as a seller. As a buyer, on a $50 transaction, they required a $25 fee to recover the $50 since the seller never shipped the item. As a seller, I didn't provide signature confirmation on a $500 Xbox 360, but I did purchase delivery confirmation, however that was not enough PROOF of shipment they said. The person who received the Xbox360 was using a Stolen credit card on Paypal. They took the money out of my account 2 weeks later.. and I was left -$500 and no Xbox. Paypal is TERRIBLE for both buyers and sellers. Ebay owns Paypal. They banned Google checkout from Ebay? Not surprising at all. Of course they don't want to use a company that could possible be better for both Buyers and Sellers. If they did that, they wouldn't all the money that they're making from screwing you over on Paypal.

Is it that obvious that they are afraid of a competition therefore they want to supress it! I think Google should have their own auction marketplace like eBay. They have the audience and resources. Sign me UP!!!

A load of eBS!
It's astonishing that Meg Whitman and her cronies can state that Google's payment system is not reliable. Anyone who uses PayPal knows how monumentally slow and unresponsive their customer service is. I haven't used Google's payment system yet, but I can guess that it's at least as effective as PayPal.

Blatant protectionism
Sounds like protectionism to me. I'm a happy user of Paypal but if I think they are up to dirty tricks, I may well start to avoid Paypal. If Paypal really thinks it's a security problem they could just put a warning about it.
