A software client on desktops and laptops can replace an appliance in branch offices

Expand Networks has unveiled a new wide area network (WAN) optimisation tool implemented as a software client running on endpoint systems.

Designed as a cost-saving solution for branch offices, each client can discover others on the same network and collaborate to boost performance, according to the company.

The Mobile Accelerator Client (Macc) was demonstrated at Interop in Las Vegas, and is due to ship in the fourth quarter of 2009. The tool is based on technology gained through Expand's acquisition of NetPriva last year.

A major feature of the Macc client is its Collective Mode, whereby all desktop or laptop clients at the same location automatically discover each other and collaborate to create a high-performance distributed virtual cache.

Expand said that this collaborative capability mitigates the requirement for WAN accelerator appliances at the branch site, saving significantly on costs. However, an Expand appliance is still required at the other end of the link, at the datacentre or head office.

Another feature of Macc is Intelligent Location Detection, which the client uses to apply appropriate policies for quality of service (QoS). If the client detects that it is in a larger office with an accelerator appliance available, for example, it will switch into slipstream mode and leave the appliance to handle optimisation.

A different mode of behaviour known as Freestyle kicks in if the Macc detects that it is isolated, such as a laptop connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot or a hotel network. Here, it will employ dynamic discovery of the applications in use and the available bandwidth in order to optimise performance. This includes peer-to-peer QoS support for VoIP and video services, according to Expand.

The Macc will initially be available for Windows, and will be licensed based on the number of concurrent users. Pricing has yet to be confirmed, but will start at below $100 (£65) per user.
