Google is developing a tablet PC which it hopes to pitch against Apple's iPad, according to reports.
An article in The New York Times said that Google chief executive Eric Schmidt has described the device as a reader tablet that will also perform computing functions.
Such a device would be based on Google's Android operating system and Android Market, and could use the Google Book service to deliver e-books to the tablet.
The move would provide Google with another hardware device in direct competition with Apple. Once considered to be working closely on multiple levels, Apple and Google have increasingly found themselves going head to head.
The companies already produce rival smartphones with the iPhone and Nexus One, and compete in the browser market with Chrome and Safari.
Schmidt resigned from Apple's board of directors in August 2009 amid increased competition between the two firms.
Apple reported selling 300,000 iPads during the official launch day on 6 April.

R u kidding
Please u are a tech writer and u have no vision or an anti apple bias. Jobs is pretty brilliant. This mens so much either in this release or as it grows. The PC or portable form factors r convenient input output devices for work etc. This new form factor opens the door for apps. The Internet per se is dead apps r designed to take more or less advantage of it and the form factor. Integragted news, magazines, live tv, archival footage. Everything is changing and people will pay on this form factor. Tv, movies I ask again ru kidding? Auto integration of iTunes cal and contacts thru clouds. Clouds will be a bigger deal. Apple is nego with content providers. Kids watchtv and movies from their laptops. This is better. I could seriously go on.

Doesn't Anyone Remember?
I've just got to ask - doesn't anyone remember the "Smart Display" rage from a few years ago? These "Pads" are very much in the same technology vein. As I recall someone even offered a touch screen Smart Display.
