Amazon is said to be closing a number of its facilities in the US. The company is reportedly planning to shut down branches in Indiana, Nevada and Pennsylvania which had been used to distribute orders. Other facilities in each state will remain open.
The closures are expected to result in the losses of some 210 jobs. According to an Associated Press report, Amazon plans to offer eight weeks' severance pay to affected workers following the closures.
The layoffs add to a seemingly endless list of IT and e-commerce firms which have been forced to shed jobs in the economic crisis.
In the past week alone, Google and IBM have revealed job cuts, while Intel has instituted a pay freeze in order to avoid further layoffs.
Amazon released its Kindle 2 e-book reader last month.
