The European Union is conducting a major simulation aimed at testing the readiness of Europe's online defences.
The European Commission said that the test, involving communications companies and computer emergency response groups, will simulate a large-scale hacking incident aimed at disrupting or destroying internet communications across Europe.
The drill covers all EU states, along with Iceland, Switzerland and Norway.
EC Digital Agenda vice president Neelie Kroes, who is among those overseeing the exercise, visited the UK's cyber attack centre and praised Britain as an " inspiring example" for other EU member nations.
"This exercise to test Europe's preparedness against cyber threats is an important first step towards working together to combat potential online threats to essential infrastructure, and ensuring that citizens and businesses feel safe and secure online," she said.
Online attacks against government groups are growing increasingly common, and authorities have stepped up the frequency and sophistication of drills to test their readiness for attack.
The US conducted a large-scale test earlier this year to gauge its own readiness for a major attack on national network systems and critical infrastructure.
