Four IT vendors are among the top 10 firms in this year's World's Most Respected Companies list from PwC.
Microsoft moves to the top of the list from second last year, while IBM moves to fifth from fourth last year.
The new entrants to the top 10 are Apple, the highest climber at ninth from 42nd, and Siemens in at 10th position from 23rd.
Google is another high climber coming in at 39th from 58th last year, while HP suffered the greatest drop, from 10th to 46th.
Bill Gates remains the number one most respected business leader and in a new listing of 'most influential business writer or management guru' comes in at second just behind management guru Peter Drucker.
Microsoft is also rated top in the 'best for shareholder value' category and perhaps controversially in the 'best for innovation' category.
IBM and Apple were also placed in the 'best turnaround' category.
The eight year-old survey is based on 1,000 chief executive interviews. Results are weighted according to the GDP in each country.

Laughable - I'd give it a different title
The most greedy, money hungry (and if I were impolite, I'd say monopolistic too) companies. Obviously the creators of this list target one idea - making mony. If respect comes with making money, perhaps El Capone should make the list as well. Unfortunately the real innovators are usually anonymous (many time of their own fault). I know a samll company that was bought by Microsoft. They were the originators of SQL server, but they too, were tempted to sell their soul for money. And regarding Apple. They are doing the same thing to the music industry as Microsoft did with Windows to the PC world.

they're kidding me, right?
I had to hang my head in disgust after reading this article. As someone that read the transcripts of the Microsoft antitrust trial, I now realize why the judge compared Gates and Co. to Columbian drug lords. MS has got to be the most unethical, corrupt company in the country and yet their kingpin, Gates, is respected worldwide. One of MS's own executives was quoted stating that MS never innovated anything in their existence; they stole, copied, or purchased all their 'innovation'. And Gates, is a poor visionary. Didn't he think that the internet was a 'fad'? Didn't he think 128k of memory would be enough for people's needs? Doesn't his virus laden, hole filled software costs businesses and consumers billions of dollars per year? How can business leaders look up this criminal?

Two things
They did invent Microsoft Bob, which did not catch on, and alt-tab which did. Everything else was copied, cross-licenced from Apple or bought in.

you're an idiot
your comment just shows how ignorant you are. Bill Gates and the scores of software/hardware engineers that work for him have never thought up anything original. Good comment. NOT.

Chief Executive of what?
1000 chief executives think Microsoft is top in innovation? And in shareholder value? If this is an example of their knowledge and analysis skills, their own companies have a rather dismal future....

CEO's are this stupid?!
WOW! If CEO's think Microsoft is innovative they need their asses fired immediately, quick who can name one single innovation by Microsoft that wasn't bought or stolen? Exactly! The CEO's idea of shareholder value is a flat-lined stock or dropping 20% over the last five years. Don't buy from these mismanagers! CEO's think Microsoft is the best business leader. If thuggery and thievery are the only two criteria to judge success as a leader by, then yes, but then one has to ask what standards do these idiots have in their own companies? All this shows is you should never ask a CEO what's going on in the world. They are so insulated from reality that they may as well be living on Mars.

Gates, MicroSoft at the top?
Worthless list, no wonder so many big companies are in trouble.
