IBM has finally announced an estimated release date for its long-awaited Storage Tank system.

The company claims that the software will now go on sale in 2003, having first unveiled plans for the product in 2000.

Storage Tank uses storage virtualisation software to provide tools to access, share, save and manage files on a storage network.

The system is in response to an increased use of storage networks, which enable better data sharing but increase the problems of efficient management.

Big Blue confirmed that the virtualisation software will be built on Linux, and will be launched with its xSeries servers.

The company has managed to establish a strong position in the data storage market, particularly with its Shark product released in 2000. It hopes that Storage Tank will help to build on that success.
