Open-source enterprise software developer Progress Software has updated its Sonic Enterprise Bus, and announced plans to increase its use of open development standards.
Sonic ESB 8.0 offers better support for web-based applications, according to the firm, and supports portals, mashups and mobile devices through the use of Representation State Transfer architectures.
The software focuses on open, standards-based programming models and offers enhanced and simplified development for traditional web services and newer, open technologies, the firm said.
"The Sonic 8.0 products give users a 'best of both worlds' scenario, offering the benefits of open-source development along with the rich tooling that has enabled Sonic to become a market leader," said Hub Vandervoort, chief technology officer at Progress Software.
Open development means that customers avoid vendor lock-in, according to the firm, and provides access to a wide development pool which Progress claims will improve productivity and minimise the need for training.
Sonic ESB 8.0 includes patented Continuous Availability Architecture, which now delivers zero-downtime upgrades and patches, the company said.
"The availability of the Sonic 8.0 release advances the state-of-the-art in service oriented architecture and enterprise integration by combining the power and flexibility of an open model with unmatched multi-site operations management and deployment capabilities," said Vandervoort.
