Citrix has stepped up its focus on mobile and wireless working and added improved remote access security features to its MetaFrame software.

At this year's CeBIT trade show in Hanover the firm demonstrated an improved version of its authorisation and security management software, MetaFrame Secure Access Manager 2.2.

Designed to allow clients to access the web regardless of whether they are within or outside their corporate networks, Citrix claims that its latest MetaFrame release will boost mobile workers' productivity levels.

Version 2.2 manages access and security within a distributed environment, and new features enable Secure Sockets Layer synchronisation with Microsoft Outlook and web access to centrally hosted applications.

A Citrix spokesman said: "[This new release] provides users with a login to the secure access manager process.

"It creates a secure connection that allows the user to access email and work on applications. It works with Outlook and Express now, with Notes to come later."

Citrix also outlined how the latest MetaFrame release supports "alternative" user interfaces or portals including Plumtree, SAP and IBM Websphere, designed to allow organisations to manage the distribution of digital content.

The company shared its platform with Intel, and used the opportunity to reiterate its commitment to the chipmaker's "mobilised software initiative".

Erik Steeb, Intel EMEA director of architecture marketing, said: "Gartner has said that organisations can gain 20 per cent more productivity from notebooks versus wired desktops.

"We are working with Citrix to make sure that mobile wireless access is seamless, easy and secure."
