FutureTV has linked up with Mondex International to provide electronic cash for a pay-as-you-use feature on its personalised television service that will create the same revolution in broadcasting as in mobile phones.
FutureTV is a complete solution, from the consumer interface to the backend network management system. It works seamlessly with existing cable TV and telephone networks to deliver interactive services and content on demand through a television or computer. FutureTV will offer subscribers to its system a Mondex smartcard as part of the service rollout.
The technology uses a Mondex enabled set-top box which allows viewers to pay only for the time they spend watching their chosen programmes, whether in part or in full.
The FutureTV smartcard technology also enables users to navigate its Mi global service network with an electronic guide offering personalised programming. Instead of viewers being limited to the programmes provided by local broadcasters, they can slot their personalised smartcard into the system set-top box and find programmes that interest to them.
Ricky Rand, FutureTV's chief executive, said: "This development is not just about the home market. We can see further down the track when people will be able to slip their smartcard into a card reader on a plane or train with an LCD television in the head-rest.
"They will be able to access their personalised electronic programme guide, choose their own film or music from their unique menu, and have complete control over the selection process."
"We are working with Mondex and banks throughout the world to make this a reality," he confirmed.
An independent survey conducted by NOP last autumn on behalf of Mondex International revealed that 57 per cent of Britons would, if given a choice, opt for pay-as-you-use digital TV rather than the current subscription method of monthly bills.
