Egg's Web site continues to suffer cracks and has had to shut down whilst fixes to its credit card servicing application are made.

Last week VNU Newswire reported that the Prudential's online banking division had suffered Internet connection problems, which delayed applications for its Internet card, launched earlier in the week.

Today Egg Customers who have successfully applied for the card are unable to service their new credit card - despite promises that they would be able to from the 28 September.

A customer told VNU Newswire: "I applied for an Egg credit card via their Web site and a letter was sent through with my password to access my Internet account. It said I could log on from the 28th, but today I couldn't get onto their servicing application on the site."

"The call centre told me that it will not be live until the end of the week and to leave it until Monday," he added.

The customer who did not wish to be named said that: "I can't access my credit card number. They've killed the ability of people to do any online shopping over the weekend. It's another case of Egg launching a system before they are ready."

On contacting the call centre, an assistant said: "What's happening at the moment is we are putting links in to activate the credit card. We have closed the Web site whilst we put fixes into the servicing screen. It will presently be open but I'm not sure when."

A spokesperson for Egg was unavailable for comment at lunchtime.
