Owners of Apple's iPhone are more likely to use the handset for email, news and social networking than owners of other smartphones, according to a recent report.
Research firm comScore said in its inaugural report into iPhone use in the UK that iPhone owners access far more premium data services than their counterparts on other smartphones.
The report found that 79.7 per cent of iPhone owners had used their handsets to access news and information on the web, while 75.4 per cent had sent and received email.
In the overall smartphone market just 48 per cent of users make use of their web browser, and only 35.4 use their handsets for email.
Other areas where the iPhone is far ahead of the curve include social networking and web search, where the iPhone logged usage percentages of 54.8 and 55.1 respectively. The figures for all smartphones were 29.6 per cent and 31.9 per cent.
ComScore analyst Alistair Hill credited much of the rise to widespread adoption of the iPhone's touch-screen keyboard. However, he also noted that the uncapped data policy and popularity among the more-connected 'early adopter' set may have inflated the numbers.
"While the device's ease of use is certainly contributing to the lift in mobile media consumption, the fact that the device requires a subscription package that includes an unlimited data plan is also a contributing factor," Hill noted.
"However, it is also important to note that, while nearly all iPhone owners are consuming mobile media, the device is in the hands of only two per cent of mobile phone users in the UK."

Do you agree?
iPhone the thicko's 'smart' phone
Whilst I agree that the iPhone is very easy to use, I chose to buy a HTC Touch HD. Bigger screen than the iPhone, and much more configurable. Out of the box, the iPhone is much more intuative. But after about an hour of downloading apps (all free, unlike the useful iPhone apps) and changes to Windows mobile (which the Touch HD comes with) my HTC will do much more things that the iPhone could never do. My point therefore is that yes the iPhone has marketed very well, and created a product which 'normal' users want. But as always, if you're willing to do your research, there is a better product out there. This article simply demonstrates that the public are sheep who aren't willing to research and understand the market.

Well Yeah...
Well Yeah, i'm not paying £35 a month + £199 for a phone, just to make phone calls and send a sms. The iPhone platform is amazing. The applications available was the biggest turn on for me, i can run my online business from my iPhone, literally. Apple really have re-coined the term 'Smart Phone'.
