The European Commission today levied its largest ever fine on antitrust grounds against Microsoft. But how does the €497m (£331m) penalty compare with others imposed by the EC?

Hoffman-Laroche (2001): €462m imposed on the Swiss chemical firm for leading a vitamins price-fixing cartel.

BASF (2001): €296m imposed on the German company for joining the same vitamin cartel.

Lafarge (2002): €249.6m levied against French cement group for fixing plasterboard prices.

Arjo Wiggins (2001): the European paper group was fined €184m for setting up a cartel in carbonless paper.

Nintendo (2002): the Japanese gaming firm was fined €149m over the distribution of its computer consoles and games in Europe.
