IBM has finally announced the general availability of Storage Tank, its distributed file system developed specifically for storage environments.

The system is officially called the TotalStorage San File System (San FS).

When the project was first unveiled the system was due to ship in early 2001. This first version supports only IBM storage hardware, AIX and Windows.

Distributed file systems give access to data from disparate platforms so that, for example, Windows and different flavours of Unix can see the same data.

Storage Tank is a layer of virtualisation that separates servers from storage devices and presents the data to applications regardless of where it is sitting, or which application wrote it, offering file, rather than block-level, virtualisation.

To do so, it requires its metadata to be located on a server of its own in the network, linking the application servers to the data. Storage Tank serves as a common 'language', making files readable by incompatible operating systems.
