Alfresco's software has passed the 5015.02 standard certification

Open source content management firm Alfresco Software has announced the availability of its Alfresco Records Management Module.

The firm said that the module adds records management and retention tools to its current offerings, and is pitched at governments and commercial organisations.

Alfresco hopes that the release will be supported by its recent testing success, in which it became the first open source software company to pass the rigorous US Department of Defence 5015.02 standard certification.

"Alfresco Records Management Module has the ability to transform the way in which government and commercial organisations approach their governance, retention and compliance strategies, as the open-source pricing model will significantly reduce the barrier to regulatory compliance," said John Newton, chief technology officer at Alfresco.

"The 5015.02 standard has become a benchmark for electronic records management systems, and this certification demonstrates our commitment to delivering cost-effective technology to help organisations preserve official records in accordance with the strict legal requirements needed to manage vital company information."

Included in the module is a Simple Single Repository, which keeps all content in one place and will enable "seamless" integration with document and web content management firms, according to the firm. Alfresco added that this would mitigate the risks associated with moving data between systems.

The web-based interface is easy to use and clear to understand, the firm said, and can be accessed and used from any secure location. Support for IMAP will make email easy to manage without the need to install any extra plug-ins, and permissions can be set based on user needs.

The module is available immediately.
