A dangerous strain of 'virus spam' is tricking computer users into allowing serious infections into home and business computer systems, IT experts have warned.
According to industry body The Corporate IT Forum (Tif) virus spam, or 'v-spam', dodges antivirus and firewall systems by tempting users to click on a website link contained in an email which then sends them a virus.
Tif said that incidents of v-spam are increasing at the same rate as spam, which has doubled over the past year.
While any virus can be delivered in this way, Tif believes that the key logger virus, which silently sits in computers recording key strokes and bank and credit card details, could be one of the most dangerous.
"Clicking on a link in a spam email is the equivalent of handing a burglar the keys to your house," said David Roberts, chief executive at Tif.
"People must understand that there could be a very nasty shock lurking behind each and every spam email.
"If you open up a link in a spam email, it may be days or weeks before you know you have a virus. You are not going to get flashing lights telling you what you have done."
Popular versions of v-spam are thought to be emails offering the chance to unsubscribe to bogus e-newsletters by clicking on a link; messages with links to 'unbeatable offers'; and emails tempting users to download festive greetings cards.
Billions of spam emails are delivered each day, most sent with the aim of attracting surfers to buy products or services from the internet.
While many users think that spam is intrusive and offensive, it is often considered more of an irritation than a threat - until now.
"The strain of v-spam means that computer users and the government, when setting legislation, must take the issue of spam a lot more seriously as the viruses they can let in can cause damage to both home computers and business systems," Tif warned.
Roberts added: "The message is clear: be alert, always think before you click and never be fooled by great deals sent by email."

key-logger ---menace
About this key-logger virus well let me tell you exactly how it works = I first went in to look at Twitter which was a made up web-page then bang this Key/Logger/Virus was already in my p.c. I never knew much about this sort of thing , like everyone else just went along useing my p.c as per usual. To begin with all you get is a grey screen + every program on your p.c becomes infected with a small yellow bubble pops up saying key/logger/ credit-card details. So if i went in to my media player or anything else this bubble comes up asking for this credit-card material, but not only that you dont get back on-line to fix it and your computer is no-use to no one. I had to go out and buy a whole new set up because the damage this rubbish had done to my p.c. Basically i shoul have got a new hard drive but started afresh. To be honest i put in AVG + ADWARE protection but how long they will last i dont know as these people doing these type of hacking or phishing are a complete joke and just every-day crooks as for me i dont use the internet for shopping so no luck. But just so frustrated about this there should be massive alerts go out to all companys and house holders too, its just total infringment of your lifes belongings.

Concerned
My Kaspersky showed me a message a few days ago - Key Logger activity detected. So, how do I detect this and how to remove? Any answers, any help?

Paradox
I'm worried I might have a virus that my current Anti -Virus software can't see, I may have a Key Logger!!..who knows? How do I find out? I find a sight that offers me.." Click here for a FREE check on your PC to see if you have any Key Loggers or Viruses" NO WAY am I going to click ANYWHERE!!! For all I know, clicking on just such a link would probably download this malwear strait on to my hard drive...who the hell can we trust???

Love the irony
I think this is a valuable article, but couldn't help having a giggle after reading it. The consistent message in the article is not to randomly click on links. After reading all that, at the bottom, there are 3 options for you to choose from, ie. reddit,del.icio.us and digg this.... all dodgy names. Hmmmm, to click or not to click, lol.
