Sun Microsystems is to acquire Procom Technology, a manufacturer of network attached storage (Nas) appliances, for $50m in cash.
Sun has had a licence for Procom's storage management software since April 2004, which is incorporated into its StorEdge 5000 products.
The vendor will now own the intellectual property for the software that lets administrators use wizards to install and manage storage appliances.
Sun president and chief operating officer Jonathan Schwartz explained that the deal signals further consolidation in the storage market.
"The entire storage marketplace is clearly moving towards industry standard platforms and operating systems," he said.
Nas appliances aim to offer quick access to information without putting any stress on servers.
Sun uses the Procom software in its Compliance Archiving System which targets companies looking for a way to store data in compliance with government legislation and data integrity requirements.
