Consumer electronics giant Sony is set to lock horns with Apple, as it launches a digital music player to rival the omnipresent iPod.

Hoping to steal some of the iPod's thunder, Sony confirmed today that it is launching its first portable hard disc player.

The 20GB Network Walkman HD1, which Sony promises is capable of storing 13,000 tracks, will hit the shops in Europe this summer.

It is expected to cost around $400 (£220), and should offer around 30 hours of battery life.

In an effort to boost the popularity of Sony's online music store, the NW-HD1 will convert songs to Sony's proprietary Atrac 3 format.

Sony pioneered the way for personal stereos with its groundbreaking launch of the first Walkman 25 years ago. More recently, however, it has seen its MiniDisc range overlooked as Apple's iPod has become the portable music gadget of choice.
