NEC and Novell have released software designed to improve availability and recovery when using the latters’ Suse Linux Enterprise Server (Suse LES) and hosted or cloud-based software.

The firms announced the immediate availability of the release, and said that it would improve availability and serviceability in mixed operating system and hypervisor environments thrown up by the use of Suse LES.

The system, which the firms have called NEC Expresscluster 3.0 is certified for, and supported by, Linux Enterprise server 11, and will let firms ensure business continuity over virtualised Linux and Windows workloads.

The release is a sort of acknowledgment of the fact that firms are using mixed systems thanks to the increased use of cloud services and virtualisation, according to the firm.

"In recent years, due to cloud computing and server virtualisation, the system environment has been changing. These changes have resulted in complicated IT systems and increased the risk of business discontinuance," said Harumi Ikeda, vice president and executive general manager of NEC's IT Software Operations Unit.

"NEC and Novell are overcoming these issues by providing a reliable and available mission critical system platform through the combination of Expresscluster and Suse Linux Enterprise Server."

Expresscluster should let firms recover applications and data in minutes, regardless of where it resides, the firms explained, while also making sure that business systems are consistent, reliable, and available.

Holger Dyroff, vice president of business development, Open Platform Solutions at Novell, added, "The combination of [Suse Linux and Expresscluster] allows customers to deliver highly available services across Linux and Windows environments and multiple hypervisors, including Suse Linux Enterprise Server with Xen from Novell."
